Adaptive reuse of an existing industrial building (urban regeneration and circular use of the built environment).
"Streetmekka Copenhagen is an innovative sports and community facility created through the adaptive reuse of a former tram depot in Copenhagen. Instead of constructing a new building, the project transformed an underused industrial site into a vibrant hub for street sports, physical activity, and youth engagement. The facility provides spaces for street basketball, street football, parkour, skateboarding, dance, fitness, and cultural activities, serving people of different ages and backgrounds.
The innovation is based on the circular and resource-efficient use of existing infrastructure. By preserving and repurposing the original industrial structure, the project reduced the need for new construction materials, minimized demolition waste, and contributed to the regeneration of a previously underutilized urban area.
Implementation required close collaboration between the City of Copenhagen, the non-profit organization GAME, architects, funders, and local stakeholders. The former industrial building was renovated and adapted to meet modern sports and safety requirements while maintaining its unique urban character.
Beyond the physical transformation, the project introduced an innovative management model led by GAME, which combines sports, youth leadership, volunteer engagement, and community participation."
