Innovation description

Since its summer 2023 opening, IJshal De Vliet has been celebrated as Europes first energy-neutral ice hall, using multiple sustainable technologies heat pumps recover residual heat from ice-making to warm the swimming pool solar panels atop the building rain- and meltwater capture systems for sanitary use modular construction and green roofs. The whole complex is gas-free and CO2neutral.

Initially, in 2012, the idea was to build an indoor pool next to an outdoor pool at De Vliet. One that was more energy-efficient than a pool slated for demolition elsewhere in the city. When the municipality approved the project after five years, an alternative plan emerged a combination of an indoor pool and an ice rink. Not only could they share functionalities such as an entrance hall, ticket office, catering facilities, and office space, but it also yielded synergy benefits. Ice production releases a lot of heat. By using this heat to heat the pool, it was possible to achieve a 100 energy-neutral complex.

Thanks to the installation of heat-exchanging water pumps, De Vliet Ice Rink is almost completely energy-neutral! The partnership between the swimming pool and the ice rink is being further expanded. Residual heat from the ice rink is converted into heat for the swimming pool via a pump system. The sports complex also features green roofs, including 3400 solar panels and vegetation to promote biodiversity.
